- Zomerkade 3,4km (Zomerkade 272)
gently sloping sandy beach, playground for children, swimming jetty, kiosk and toilets, several cafes & restaurants. If parking nearby is not possible, drive to the ‘P’ on the ‘Zuiderzee 63’ (Surf Club). From there take a small path to the Zomerkade beach.
- Harderwijkerzand 5,4km (Hardwijkerzand)
smaller beach without facilities, next to the so-called Sphinx buildings.

Walking/Activities:
- Walking route Huizer milkmaid - see flyer (short route 45 min, long route 75 min)
- View the historic botters (Havenstraat 300), discover the Nautical Quarter (Vlaarboom) and walk past medieval farms (Visserstraat, Schipperstraat, Vletstraat, Waterstraat).
- The forest is nearby: walk out of the street Ruyterstraat to the roundabout Driftweg/Karel Doormanlaan, continue on the Driftweg and take the first right past the horses towards the forest. A little further on is Tea House Bos En Hei (Oud Huizerweg 30, Naarden). You can walk to the Limitische Heide or further towards the Gooimeer.
- Fancy a walk on the moor (heather fields)? This is possible near the Schaapskooi (sheep) Blaricummer Heide / Tafelberg (highest point of the Gooi). Park your car/bicycle at 'Restaurant De Goede Gooier Blaricum' or 'Café Restaurant De Eendracht Blaricum'.
- Tea gardens, in our area there are a number of tea gardens. They are cafes in a mostly green environment where you can enjoy a refreshment and something tasty. At a 1.2 km walking distance you will find Theehuis Bos En Hei (Oud Huizerweg 30, Naarden). With a playground for small children!).
- Guided walks through the village of Huizen (in Dutch we assume)

- Naarden Vesting (6km) is one of the best preserved fortified towns and unique because of its star-shaped construction - see flyer
- Groeneveld Castle (Groeneveld 2, Baarn) for beautiful walks. Grand Café Groeneveld is next door.

Bicycle rental & routes:
- Robert Harms Tweewielers (Lindenlaan 54, Huizen) 850m A bicycle for adults (›1.60m) costs 12.50 euro per day (price 2023). For the youngest, a child seat can be mounted on the back of one of the bicycles. The shop advises to contact about 2 weeks in advance to reserve the bicycles. The store is closed on Sundays and Mondays.
- Fletcher Hotel (Mastspoor 1, Huizen) 2,2 km. They rent out adult e-bikes for 29 euros per day (price 2023). There are a number of child seats available.

City’s:
- Amsterdam (32 km, without traffic jams: 30 minutes by car, 45 minutes by public transport)
Amsterdam is the Netherlands’ capital, known for its artistic heritage, elaborate canal system and narrow houses with gabled facades, legacies of the city’s 17th-century Golden Age. Purchase tickets in time for museums such as the Van Gogh Museum, Anne Frank House… - Utrecht (30 km, without traffic jams: 30 minutes by car, 55 minutes by public transport)
Utrecht is also a big city but it is less intense than Amsterdam. It’s a lovely city with beautiful old buildings and a lot of history. It has canals, but not to the same extent as the miles of terraced houses along the beautiful canals of Amsterdam. - Amersfoort (30 km, without traffic jams: 30 minutes by car, 50 minutes by public transport)
Amersfoort is an even smaller version of Amsterdam and Utrecht. That's why you won't find many tourists here. It has fewer attractions but it is nice to combine some sightseeing with shopping. - Hilversum (12 km, without traffic jams: 22 minutes by car, 35 minutes by public transport)
Hilversum is known as a media city, also called Hollywood, many tv programs are made here. It does not have the charm of an old city like Amsterdam or Utrecht. You might want to visit it for shopping.

Public transport
- 9292 is the online platform (website/app) for all public transport in the Netherlands with up-to-date travel information. Enter our address and the destination, this platform will show you all the options and the costs. You can buy the tickets online (website or app).
- Tickets: use your debit card, credit card, smartphone or wearable to check in and out. eg in the bus there are machines where you can hold your card. Be aware to have a different card for each passenger or buy tickets from the bus driver. Don’t forget to check-out!
- Seniors (65+) and children up to and including 11 years of age are entitled to an age discount!
- Huizen does not have a train station, the nearest train-station is ‘Naarden-Bussum’ at 6,5 km.

To Amsterdam by car:
Possibility: drive to P+R Zeeburg (Zuiderzeeweg 46 a, Amsterdam) and from there take Tram 26 to Central Station or bus 37 to Amstelstation. From these two locations you can walk into the center or transfer to trams / metros / train / bus / ferry.
Villa 't Hooge Nest (1 km)
‘The Sisters of Auschwitz’ is a historical non-fiction book that tells the powerful true story of Janny and Lien Brilleslijper, two Jewish sisters who became key figures in the Dutch resistance during World War II.
The book follows their journey from their early lives in the Netherlands to their involvement in underground activities, where they helped shelter and save fellow Jews from Nazi persecution.
They eventually establish 't Hooge Nest, a hidden safe house in the Dutch countryside (1km from our home!) that becomes a refuge for those fleeing the Holocaust. Under the sisters’ leadership, the house will soon grow into one of the largest hiding places in the Netherlands.
However, their resistance work leads to their capture, and they are deported to Westerbork, then Auschwitz, and finally Bergen-Belsen, where they cross paths with Anne Frank. Janny became friends with Anne Frank and is one of the last people to see Anne Frank alive.
The book 't Hooge Nest (2018) written by Roxane van Iperen has been translated into more than 20 languages and has been on the New-York Times bestseller list for months.
The Villa is inhabited by Roxanne's family. You can walk along, but please respect the privacy of the residents. It’s a 1km walk from our home. The path leads past the house through the forest to the cafe Bos en Hei (1,6 km - with playground).

Café/restaurants in snature
Below we have listed a few catering establishments which might serve to take a break. It could also be the end or startpoint of your hike. All of them have inside and outside seating.
They all serve drinks, tea and coffee; also you can order snacks, pastries or light meals. Some are open longer and also serve dinner.
- Bos en Hei, the nearest one, with a playground for young children.
- Brave Hendrik, one of our favorite locations because of its cosy atmosphere, however we do think that the walks aren't so nice in this area.
- Eendracht, visit the schaapskooi Blaricummerheide nextdoor in spring when the lambs have just been born! Enjoy the view from the Tafelberg, this hill has a height of 39.2 meters above sea level, making it the highest point in the area.
- Heidezicht in Bussum with a large playground.
- La Place in Laren is a chain, so bigger than the others and has self-service which is easy.
- Theehuis 't Bluk with lovely nature around. Enjoy the heathland and take one of the several sandy paths.
